Police have now released CCTV images of a man they believe could help them with their inquiries. They believe he could have information "vital" to the investigation.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "It is believed during the assault he fell to the floor and hit his head on a wall knocking him unconscious. The man was taken to hospital with a large cut to the back of his head."

Detective Inspector Paul Jones added: “This appears to be an unprovoked assault on a man who was out with a group of friends in the city centre. Thankfully he was not more seriously injured.

“Enquiries have been carried out to identify the male in the CCTV images as we believed he has information which is vital to our investigation.

“I would appeal to anyone who recognises the man or knows of his whereabouts to contact us.”
