Man, 41, arrested as gardai seize €140,000 of heroin after searching car in Loughrea, Co Galway

A man was arrested after €140,000 worth of heroin was seized after a search of a car in Co Galway.

The man, 41, was detained after the drugs bust which happened in Loughrea at 11.25pm on Friday.

The suspect was quizzed at Galway Garda Station under the Drug Trafficking Act.

Gardai later released the man and said a file will be prepared for the DPP.

The seizure was made by gardai attached to the Galway Divisional Drug Unit.

A spokesman said: "On Friday 3rd January 2020 at approximately 11.25pm, Gardaí attached to the Galway Divisional Drug Unit conducted a search of a car in Loughrea, County Galway which resulted in the seizure of suspected heroin (pending analysis) with an estimated value of approximately €140,000.

"A 41 year old male was arrested at the scene and was detained at Galway Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

"He has since been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Investigations are ongoing."
