Man, 40s, dies after serious assault in Portlaw, Co Waterford

A man in his 40s has died after a serious assault in Co Waterford this morning.

The incident happened in the Portlaw area of the county in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene and the victim was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Gardai say they are investigating all of the circumstances of his death.

A man in his 20s has been arrested by gardai following the incident. He is currently being held in Tramore Garda station.

A garda spokesman said: "The scene is preserved for a forensic and technical examination and the services of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau have been requested.

"The investigation is ongoing.

"No further information is available at this time."
