Man, 40s, dies after fatal crash on Irish road as Gardai appeal for witnesses

A man in his 40s has tragically died after a fatal car crash in the early hours of this morning.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses following the single-car collision, which occurred in Co Kerry just after midnight.

The driver of the vehicle – a man in his 40s who was the sole occupant of the car – was pronounced dead on the scene at Main Street, Moyvane.

His body has since been taken to University Hospital Kerry where a post-mortem examination is set to take place.

Traffic diversions are in place in the area this morning as a Garda forensic investigator assesses the scene of the accident.

Officers have asked any road users in the area at the time who have camera footage – including dash-cam – to come forward and make the video available to investigating Gardai.

A Garda spokesperson said: "At approximately 12:40am Gardaí and Emergency services were alerted to a single car collision on Main Street, Moyvane.

"The driver of the car, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. He was the sole occupant of the car.

"His body has since been removed to University Hospital Kerry where a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The local Coroner has been notified. The results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the Garda investigation.

"A Garda forensic collision investigator will examination the scene this morning. Local traffic diversions are currently in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward and to any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at the time to make it available to investigating Gardaí."

The tragic news comes amid a slew of warnings over treacherous conditions on Irish roads as a cold snap keeps the country firmly in its grasp.

This morning, AA Roadwatch warned of icy conditions in Galway, Longford, Roscommon, Cavan, Tipperary, Laois, Offaly and Carlow.

Motorists in those areas are advised to be extremely careful on the roads.
