Man, 40s, dead and two injured after late-night horror crash in Donegal as gardai close road

A man has died and two are seriously injured after a late-night crash near Buncrana on Monday night.

Gardai are investigating the fatal accident which occurred in Meenaward at around 10:50 pm.

According to officers, the crash involved two cars and happened on Mountain Road between Buncrana and Carndonagh.

The driver of one vehicle, who was aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

His body has since been taken to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital.

The driver and passenger of the second car involved were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The condition of the passenger, a woman aged in her 30s, is described as serious.

The scene of the crash is currently closed off to commuters and local diversions are in place at Drumfries and Churchlanquarters.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward and for those with camera footage (including dash-cam) to make it available to them.

In a statement released this morning, a spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Meenaward near Buncrana, Co. Donegal on Monday evening, 2nd May 2022 at approximately 10.50pm.

“The collision involved two vehicles on the Mountain Road between Buncrana and Carndonagh.

“The driver of one vehicle, a male aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been taken to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital.

“The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The condition of the passenger, a female aged in her 30s, is described as serious.

“The Mountain Road (R244) is currently closed between Buncrana and Carndonagh as the scene is preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions are in place at Drumfries and Churchlanquarters.

“Gardaí in Buncrana are appealing for witnesses to come forward and to those with camera footage (including dash-cam) to make it available to them.”
