Man, 40, found dead in grounds of derelict church

The body of a man has been found in the grounds of a derelict church in Manchester.

Police and paramedics were called to St Luke's in Cheetham Hill on Saturday morning following reports of concern of for the welfare of a man there.

The man, 40, was declared dead at the scene.

The former Anglican church grounds, at the junction of Cheetham Hill Road and Smedley Lane, was cordoned off while an investigation into the the death was launched.

Detectives believe the death is not suspicious.

Officers will prepare a file for the coroner and an inquest is expected to be held into the death.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called to Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester, at around 9am today (26 June) to concerns over the welfare of a male.

"North West Ambulance Service also attended but, sadly, a 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene."

"There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and the file will be passed to the coroner."
