Man, 39, charged with possession of offensive weapon after reports of Metrolink passenger seen carrying 'bladed article'

A man has been charged with carrying a weapon after reports that someone was seen with 'a knife' on the Metrolink.

Police have been investigating reports that a man was seen on a tram, was verbally abusive to a woman, and was then again sighted armed in Prestwich over the weekend.

Patrick O'Brien, of no fixed abode, was charged on Wednesday with possession of a bladed article, possession of an offensive weapon.

He was also charged with one count of section 4 and one count of section 5 of the Public Order Act.

The 39-year-old has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "At around 12.30pm on Saturday, June 27, police received a report of a man acting suspiciously on a Metrolink service at Victoria Station. The man is believed to also have been verbally abusive to a woman on the tram.

"The man is understood to have been sighted an hour later in Prestwich with a bladed article.

"Following a media appeal, a 39-year-old man contacted police about the incidents and was later arrested."
