Man, 38, allegedly assaulted two police officers during arrest at Kurri Kurri

A MAN accused of assaulting two police officers at Kurri Kurri has appeared in Newcastle Bail Court.

Police say Stephen James Southworth, 38, of Waratah, was pulled over by officers on Heddon Street, Kurri Kurri about 8.30pm on Friday night.

Police spoke with Mr Southworth before he allegedly resisted officers while they conducted a search of his Ford Laser.

As he was being arrested, Mr Southworth allegedly punched a senior constable in the head before police deployed a blast of capsicum spray.

Mr Southworth allegedly fled the scene and, after a short foot pursuit, was arrested again.

Police allege that during this second arrest, Mr Southworth punched a second female senior constable in the head.

He was taken to Cessnock police station and charged with two counts of resisting arrest and three counts of assaulting police.

He was refused bail by police and appeared in Newcastle Bail Court on Saturday.
