Man, 37, found dead after buying controlled drug online, inquest told

A man died of an accidental drug overdose after buying a controlled drug over the internet, an inquest heard.

Daniel John Parsons, known as Danny, was found dead at his home in Heol y Gwrgan in Port Talbot on Saturday, February 29.

The inquest, held at Swansea's Guildhall on Tuesday, heard the 37-year-old had previously been a heroin user and had a history of mental health issues but was "supported by his family".

The day before he died Mr Parsons had contacted his father to ask for a lift to the chemist to pick up a prescription. After dropping him home his father described his son as "being on top form".

Mr Parsons' partner explained that later that day he left to do some shopping but when he returned he had facial injuries after getting into a fight.

South Wales Police detective constable Alanna Lan said the following day response officers were called to the property. She said: "It appeared from a police investigation that in the days leading up to his death he was using a significant number of medication over a short period of time.

"There were various purchases of a Valium-type drug from the internet which were not prescribed to him.

"At the scene a Xanax tablet was seized and taken to a pharmacy to confirm what it was and they said it was possibly American which indicates that it was bought online.

"It was a controlled drug which is illegal to take without a prescription."

Detective constable Lan told the inquest that despite there being "some concern" over his facial injuries South Wales Police concluded there were "no suspicious circumstances" surrounding Mr Parsons' death and it was suspected to be drug-related.

A toxicology report found levels of flualprazolam (a controlled drug), methadone, pregabalin (used to treat epilepsy and anxiety), diazepam (used to treat anxiety), and codeine in his blood.

A pathology report detailed "some scratches" and minor abrasions that Dr John Williams said "may have been related to the alleged altercation".

Recording a conclusion of a drug-related death, acting senior coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Colin Phillips said: "He died as an unintended consequence of a drug overdose."
