Man, 36, died when he became 'buried' in hole after trying to rescue dog

A man died after being "buried" in a hole while trying to get a dog to safety, an inquest opening has heard.

Gary Davies, 36, of St Harmon, Rhayader, died earlier this month following the tragic incident.

At a brief hearing on Friday at Pontypridd Coroners' Court an inquest was opened into his death where brief details were given about the incident.

Coroner's officer Emma Mathias told the hearing Mr Davies' dog "ran loose" before going down a hole. She told the hearing: "Mr Davies had gone in the hole trying to reach the dog and some of the loosing fell on top of him and buried him."

The hearing was told emergency services were called to the scene and he was taken to hospital. He died on January 16, 2021.

A pathology report indicated Mr Davies had sustained a brain injury but a full investigation has yet to conclude.

Coroner Graeme Hughes said the full hearing will take place at the coroners' court in Welshpool when all the relevant evidence has been collected and the hearing was adjourned.
