Man, 35, charged with alleged armed robbery at Betfred store in Jarrow

Police investigating an armed robbery at a South Tyneside bookmakers have now charged a man.

At about 8pm on Tuesday, officers received a report that a man had entered the Betfred store on Ellison Street, Jarrow , carrying what was described as a homemade weapon

The man is alleged to have threatened the shopkeeper and demanded she empty the contents of the till before making off with a quantity of cash.

The shopkeeper was uninjured but left shaken by the incident.

A man has now been charged in connection and will appear in court on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation was subsequently launched and police have now charged Anthony Patterson, 35, of no fixed abode, with robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

"He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside this morning (Thursday).

"Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 945 090719."
