A man was arrested after a machete-wielding thug stormed an Asda store in Birkenhead on Saturday morning.
Two men stormed into the shop on Stanley Road at around 11.20am, one of them brandishing a blade - and escaped with a haul of cash.
This morning, Merseyside Police confirmed they had arrested a 35-year-old man , from Prenton, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
He was taken to a police station to be questioned and has now been bailed.
The offenders are believed to have left on a motorbike and travelled towards Birkenhead town centre.
No staff were injured, although they were understandably shaken and police confirmed CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing.
Yesterday, unnerved staff gathered outside the store while officers carried out their investigations inside.
The shop was closed to members of the public, but the Iceland next door continued trading.
Asda bosses declined to comment.
Detective Inspector Paul Gillies, of Merseyside Police, said: “This robbery will have been a huge shock to all staff who witnessed it and we're are determined to find those responsible as soon as possible and take them off the streets.
"Did you see the incident or a motorbike making off? Your info, CCTV or dashcam footage could be vital.
“Tell us what you know and we’ll do the rest.
"We will be supporting those staff who experienced this incident and will work alongside the business to ensure this despicable incident is fully investigated.”
