A man has been charged with attempted murder after a police sergeant was stabbed in Newport.

The 33-year-old has been charged after a 47-year-old police sergeant was injured while he responded to an alleged incident on Thursday.

The officer suffered wounds to his abdomen and remains in a serious condition.

The man, who has not been named, has also been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and an attempted section 18 assault against a second Gwent Police officer.

The officers were responding to an alleged incident at an address in St Vincent Lane during the early hours of Thursday.

Shortly after officers attended the scene, they reported a fire at the location and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the blaze.

The sergeant, who is from the Newport area, remains in a serious but stable condition at the Royal Gwent Hospital.

A 33-year-old Pc, also from Newport, was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and has since been discharged.

A police spokesman said: "On Thursday April 23 officers responded to a report of disorder at an address in St Vincent Lane in Newport.

"Officers later arrested a 33-year-old man from the area on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and arson with intent to endanger life.

"This evening, the 33-year-old man was charged with these offences as well as attempted section 18 assault against a second officer and will appear in Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning.

"The police sergeant involved remains in a serious but stable condition and continues to improve in hospital."
