Man, 32, threatened to 'f***ing kill the pair of them' after demanding £10,000 lump sum from parents - or £100 a week

A 32-year-old man threatened to kill his own parents if they didn’t continue to financially support him.

Ian Martindale asked for either a £10,000 lump sum or £100 a week.

He sent his parents numerous threatening messages about money in April and said he would firebomb their house.

After police went to his home in Stretford, he continued making threats, telling the cops: "Tell my parents to sleep with one eye open."

He said he was going to 'kill the f***ing pair of them', Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

In his police interview, Martindale said he made the threats in 'anger' because his parents would not financially support him.

He said he wanted to 'frighten them' into stumping up cash.

Martindale pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill; and possession of cannabis.

He was handed a 14-week sentence, which was suspended for 18 months.

Prosecutor Lisa Boocock said that on April 4, officers were alerted threatening texts.

Miss Boocok said: "The defendant said 'I want a £10,000 lump sum, either that or £100 a week for me fixed, let me have a life with that kind of money, we both know you owed me a life'.

"The defendant was arrested by the police during the early hours of the morning and he was found with a small bag of cannabis on him.

"Whilst travelling to custody the defendant continued making comments about his parents, including 'tell my parents to sleep with one eye open', 'going to kill the f***ing pair of them' and 'parents will pay for it'.

"There was a further comment of 'it’s logical to carry out the threats if the threats are going to ruin my life anyway."

Martindale has previous convictions for harassment; breaching restraining orders; malicious communications; and battery.

Mitigating, Joshua Bowker said the offences were 'born out of frustration' following his arrest.

"He lost his temper and said something he shouldn’t have done.

"He tells me he is on the waiting list for Asperger's and has been for many years.

"He said it’s not easy to express some of his feelings.

"He said he felt bad and guilty straight away and felt bad ever since and he is really sorry for what he said."

He said Martindale has been in custody for seven weeks, which is equivalent to a 14-week custodial sentence.

Sentencing, Judge Sophie McKone said: "In April last year, when your parents said they would not financially support you, you resorted to making frightening threats towards them.

"When you were arrested you continued to threaten your parents to the police.

"You said for them to sleep with one eye open and threatened to firebomb their house.

"It must have been very frightening for them.

"It seems your response to not getting your own way is to issue these frightening threats.

"Looking at your previous convictions, in my view this offending must be matched by a custodial sentence, but you have spent 7 weeks in custody which is equivalent to a 14 week sentence, and you do need some support from the probation service."

Martindale, of Moss Vale Crescent, was ordered to undertake 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days was made the subject of a six-month electronically monitored curfew between 7pm and 6am.
