Man, 32, dies after lorry overturns in winds as Storm Malik claims third victim

A man has been killed in a fatal crash where a lorry was overturned by strong winds, as Storm Malik batters the UK.

The 32-year-old man is the third fatal victim of the storm, following the death of a woman in her 60s and a nine-year-old boy.

The crash which happened shortly before 8am on the M74 in Scotland, involved a lorry and a car.

Scottish Police confirmed officers are now investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A lorry was travelling northbound when it crashed through the central reservation barrier and onto the other side of the carriageway where it collided with a car travelling southbound.

"Emergency services attended and the driver of the lorry was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s family has been informed.

"The male driver of the other vehicle, a black Land Rover Discovery, was uninjured but has been left badly shaken by the incident.

"An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of the collision. The road remains closed to allow crash scene investigators to examine the scene and conduct enquiries.

"Officers are appealing to any motorists who were on the M74 with any dashcam devices to check their footage. It's possible it may have captured images which could assist officers in their enquiries."

Winds of up to 80mph have been reported across the UK while Scotland has been hit with amber weather warnings for wind by the Met Office.

Storm Malik has already claimed the life of a woman in her 60s in Aberdeen, Scotland and a nine-year-old boy in Tean, Staffordshire.

Another man in Bradford, West Yorkshire, was lucky to escape with his life when a tree fell on his van while he was getting changed inside it.

Richard Nutter was left shaken but relatively unscathed by the ordeal while his friend, Lee Warriner feared the worst as he watched horrified.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Nutter said: "I was sat in between the two back seats, just crouching down and it pushed me further down.

"I lay on the floor and my friend pulled me out the back of the van. We're both very fortunate."

Tragically others have not been so lucky.

A nine-year-old boy died as a result of his injuries after he and another man were crushed by a tree.

Staffordshire Police received reports of the incident at around 1pm on Saturday and the pair were taken to Royal Stoke Hospital, but the boy later died from his injuries.

In Aberdeen, a woman in her 60s was killed when a tree fell on her at around 10.30am today (Saturday January 29).
