Man, 31, offered Covid jab as NHS fail to update his height from when he was 5

A 31-year-old man was left in stitches after he was offered a Covid vaccine early because of a blunder at his GP surgery.

Officials mistakenly recorded Mike, from Wimbledon as being 3ft 9in tall rather than 6 ft 3in, giving him a body mass index (BMI) of 61.

A healthy adult BMI is between 18.5-24.9 - meaning he was placed in the "vulnerable" category.

Luckily, upon enquiries, the surgery noted that his actual BMI, which is calculated based on height and weight, was much lower.

Despite having his weight last recorded in November 2020 as 13 st 12lbs, Mike's height hadn't been updated since 1995, causing the miscalculation.

After contacting his GP to ask why he had been offered the vaccine so early, staff realised their error.

Mike told the Mirror: "They were a tad embarrassed as you can expect, but thrilled to see my BMI had dropped from the incredibly risky 61 (I’m equally thrilled).

"Interestingly though, they’ve told me to keep my vaccine appointment for a few day’s time. As it’s already booked in, it’s more work to make changes."

In February, journalist Liam Thorp was invited for a Covid vaccine because doctors thought he was just 6cm tall.

The 32-year-old has no underlying health conditions and said he couldn't figure out why he had been offered the vaccine so early.

Liam, the political editor for the Liverpool Echo newspaper, discovered staff had recorded his height as 6.2cm rather than 6 ft 2, giving him a BMI of 28,000.

Writing about his ordeal, Mr Thorp added: "For reference, a BMI of 40 or more is considered morbidly obese -so I'm not sure what this would have made me.

"If I had been less stunned, I would have asked why no one was more concerned that a man of these remarkable dimensions was slithering around south Liverpool.

"But he was very apologetic and really nice and I think he was just relieved that I found it so funny."

Everyone aged 50 and over in England can now book their coronavirus vaccination via the NHS website.

The UK had given the first doses of the vaccine to nearly 25 million people by Tuesday.
