Man, 31, dies after car crashes off the road and into a school field near Washington

A 31-year-old man has died after a car crashed off the road near Washington and ended up in a school field.

Emergency services were called at 8.30am on Sunday after a purple Citroen DS3 travelling on the A1231 left the road and ended up in a school field near Washington Academy.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

Police investigating the collision are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Inspector Paul Allen, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “The family of the driver are understandably devastated and are still coming to terms with what has happened.

“It does not appear that any other vehicles have been involved and we are trying to establish what happened prior to the vehicle leaving the road.

“We need to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen the purple Citroen DS3 travelling in the area earlier this morning.

“We are also asking drivers with dash cam, who were driving in the area this morning, to review their footage to see if they captured the vehicle in question.

“Any information, no matter how small, could greatly assist our investigation at this time.”

Anyone who wants to contact police can do so by calling 101 or through the ‘Tell us Something’ pages of the Northumbria Police website quoting log 297 01/11/20.
