Man, 31, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after thugs smash up Rochdale estate

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a machete attack in Rochdale.

Thugs are said to have rampaged through an estate in the early hours of Wednesday morning - smashing up cars and houses before 'chopping' at people with machetes.

Two men were taken to hospital - one of whom suffered serious leg injuries.

Their current condition is not known, however it is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police were called to Greave Avenue, at the junction of Sandy Lane, just before 12.25am.

Terrified residents described what happened as being 'like something out of a film', adding that people no longer felt safe on the estate.

One person, who asked not to be named, said another group of men tried to calm down the situation, but was attacked after confronting the yobs.

"Three cars came onto the estate, they smashed the windows out of a house down the road," they told the Manchester Evening News.

"There was another car of people who came over to try and calm them down.

"They started chopping with the machetes.

"They were getting everybody they could get at. There was no concern for anyone."

The neighbour added: "There have been three gang attacks over the last few months, knife attacks. Nobody feels safe on this estate."

Another witness said: "It was just chaos. A load of men turned up wearing balaclavas and they had machetes.

"They smashed the windows of the house in. One of the lads ran into my garden and was hiding behind my van and his leg was pouring with blood."

A third resident said: "We were watching from the window upstairs. The noise was just like something out a film. Cars showed up and people were just running around and smashing cars.

"I’ve lived here for 30 years and we’ve never had anything like this before.

"I’ve heard that one of them had a machete. It seemed like someone had it out for someone.

"I saw loads of people wearing black and running about with knives. There was screaming and shouting then the police showed up.”

A spokesman for GMP confirmed that a 31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody.

Sandy Lane has since reopened, however a number of scenes remain in place in the area.

Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
