Man, 30, threw socks full of heroin and crack cocaine during police chase

A Southport man threw away two socks filled with heroin and crack cocaine in a bid to escape police.

Damien Marshall, 30, of Leyland Road in Southport had his car stopped by police on Lord Street, Southport, on July 10 last year.

Marshall made a run for it and threw the socks down an alley.

Thanks to an eagle-eyed witness, police managed to stop the 30-year-old before he could escape and retrieve the socks.

Once recovered, the socks were examined and 159 individual wraps of drugs.

When forensically examined it revealed that the wraps contained heroin and crack cocaine.

Detective Inspector Chris Smith of Operation Hammer, the Force-Wide drug Investigation Team, said: “Thanks to some smart police work and an eagle-eyed member of the public, Marshall was apprehended and has now been jailed.

“We’re committed to pursuing and putting before the courts those who supply drugs in Merseyside. We sadly see the damage that Class A drugs causes within our communities on a daily basis, and Marshall will perhaps now consider the risks and the harm as he serves his jail time.

“Key to the many successes we have in such arrests and seizures is information from the public. If you suspect drugs are being dealt or stored in your area, please contact us in the one of the following ways and we will take action.”

Marshall was sentenced to three years and eight months for possession of intent to supply class A drugs at Liverpool Crown Court on June 10.
