An eyewitness told The ECHO multiple police patrol cars and ambulance vehicles were at the scene following the initial 999 call. An investigation into the incident has been launched and CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing.

Officers remain at the scene today, Monday, June 13, while enquiries continue and anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

Detective Inspector David Jones said: “We are investigating an assault in Liverpool this weekend which has left a man injured. Mathew Street would have been very busy on Saturday evening.

"I would urge anyone who was in Hardy's Bar at around 6pm and saw the assault take place to please contact us and help with our enquiries, as your evidence could be vital to the investigation. We want our City Centre to be a safe place for all in Merseyside to enjoy and we simply will not tolerate such acts of violence.

"With the public’s help we can make our streets safer and I would urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward.”
