A man has died after being hit by a lorry on a motorway in Merseyside.

The 28-year-old pedestrian suffered fatal injuries in the collision on the M62 at around 4pm yesterday.

It happened on the eastbound carriageway between junction 7 and 8.

In a statement this morning, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that following a road traffic collision on the M62 yesterday, (Sunday, 22 November) a 28-year-old man has sadly died.

"His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time."

Last night, in the aftermath of the crash, police said: "The collision, involving a male pedestrian and an HGV, was reported just after 4pm.

"Emergency services are in attendance and paramedics are treating the man.

"The eastbound carriageway between junctions 7 and 8 is likely to be closed for the rest of this evening and a diversion is in place.

"Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

"The westbound carriageway has been subject to temporary closures to allow emergency services access to the scene and is expected to reopen shortly."
