Man, 28, arrested after arson attack at newly-opened restaurant

A man has been arrested after an arson attack at a newly-opened restaurant in Trafford.

Emergency services were called to Na Na's Cafe and Grill on School Road, Sale, at around 10pm on Monday.

Police have confirmed residents from surrounding properties were evacuated as a precaution as firefighters tackled a blaze.

The Manchester Evening News reported the building appeared to have been damaged, although the extent isn't known.

Now Greater Manchester Police has confirmed the fire is being treated as arson.

The force revealed that following enquiries, a 28-year-old man was arrested today - Wednesday - on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

GMP said he remains in custody for questioning.

In a statement, police said: "At around 10pm on Monday 20 September 2021 police were called to reports of a fire at Na Na's Café and Grill, School Road.

"Emergency services attended and a small number of residents from surrounding properties were evacuated as a precaution.

"GMP have been working alongside GMFRS to determine the cause of the fire and it is now being treated as arson."

Detective Inspector Helen Bagnall said: "Thankfully no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire but this was a deliberate and reckless act that could have potentially cost lives.

"We have been following multiple lines of enquiry to identify the person or persons responsible for the attack and I'm pleased to say we currently have one man in custody for questioning.

"Although we have a man in custody I will stress that our investigation remains ongoing and if you do have any information, or video footage, that could assist our enquiries then please get in touch with police."

According to its Facebook page, the restaurant opened in July.

Fire crews were at the scene for 'several hours'.
