Man, 27, shot dead at Peaky Blinders fancy dress party on New Year's Eve

A 27-year-old man was shot dead during a Peaky Blinders fancy dress party on New Year's Eve, say police.

The party host was ringing in the new year with friends when one of his guests "accidentally" shot him in the chest while handling a hunting rifle at a remote house in southern France.

Pals desperately tried to save the man but he was pronounced dead after medics arrived at the scene in Monbazillac in Dordogne.

French officials said a group of former high school friends had gathered for the theme party, dressing as characters from the hit BBC period crime drama Peaky Blinders, which stars Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.

The programme, now shown around the world and available on Netflix, is set in Birmingham and follows the violent, gun-toting Peaky Blinders gang following the First World War.

Medics and police were called to the house in Monbazillac at about 9.30pm on Thursday when the 27-year-old man was shot by accident, French media reported.

He was fatally wounded by a shot from a hunting rifle, it was reported.

Also aged 27, the man who was holding the gun at the time was one of several guests who brought guns to the party, the local public prosecutor said.

The rifle belonged to his father, who is a hunter.

Also 27, that man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, France Bleu reported.

He remained in custody on Friday night.

Many of the 20-some party guests knew each other from high school and were aged in their late 20s.

The incident happened inside a garage while people were smoking outside, just hours before the clock struck midnight.

Police are treating it as an accidental shooting, local media said.

Bergerac prosecutor Odile de Fritsch told AFP: "About 20 people born between 1991 and 1993, all former high school friends, gathered Thursday in an isolated house for a fancy dress party inspired by this British television series, which features gangsters in three-piece costumes and caps.

"At around 9:30pm, a shot was fired from a weapon brought by a guest."
