Man, 27, diagnosed with tongue cancer thanks passers-by after he collapses in road

A young man diagnosed with tongue cancer wants to thank those who came to his aid after he collapsed in the middle of a busy road.

Ben Woolley, 27, had gone out for the first time since starting chemotherapy when he fell in Regent Street in Long Eaton.

He was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and had just visited a friend for coffee on April 6, the Derby Telegraph reports .

He lost the feeling in both of his legs and collapsed, but passers-by raced to his aid and he was rushed to hospital.

Mr Woolley, of Breaston, said: "I'm currently going through chemotherapy and that was one of the first times I had been out in public and I think I over-exerted myself.

"I lost the feeling and strength in my legs as I was crossing the street and just hit the floor.

"At the hospital they did several tests and an MRI on my neck and spine which both came back clear from any issues and they put it down to me just doing too much too soon and were not concerned it was anything to do with cancer."

Ben, whose recent MRI scan revealed his tumour is shrinking, made an online appeal to personally thank those who helped him in his time of need.

He said: "As to what I would like to say to the people that stopped and helped, I would just like to thank them wholeheartedly for taking the time to stop and make sure I was okay and got away safely.

"Treatment is going very well. I have a fantastic group of doctors and nurses looking after me at the Nottingham City Hospital.

"I currently have three more cycles of chemotherapy to go through until my next scan to see how things are going."

Tongue cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. Symptoms can include a patch, spot or lump on the tongue that doesn't go away.
