A young man with a "heart of gold" was tragically stabbed to death outside a train station while defending his girlfriend.
Carpenter Cam Smith was stabbed in the heart during an altercation with a gang who were abusing his partner in Seaford, southeast Melbourne.
The harrowing incident took place in front of shocked witnesses, who claimed the victim was stabbed with a broken bottle.
Police found the 26-year-old had suffered life-threatening injuries around 7pm on Wednesday and despite the efforts of paramedics he died at the scene.
Dad Mike Smith told local news network 3AW his son's girlfriend was being abused by a group of three men and a woman while the pair were getting food.
"He went to defend her and a bottle was broken and in that fight he was stabbed in the heart," he said.
"He had everything to live for, he was a go-getter, hard worker, he had a heart of gold, he would help anyone, anytime, he was just a fantastic kid."
A talented long distance runner, Cam had competed in the Australian Cross Country Championships.
His dad said he was hoping to become a registered builder and start a family.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton confirmed investigators are looking for three men and a woman in relation to the the altercation.
He promised if they don't come forward, "it won’t take us long to scoop them up".
One witness posted on Facebook that paramedics performed CPR for around 10 minutes.
No arrests have been made yet.
The tragic attack came just hours after local state Labor MP Sonya Kilkenny met with police to discuss recent anti-social behaviour at Seaford Beach, particularly under the Seaford Pier.
