Man, 24, hoping to start family with fiancée found dead hours after double date

A man texted his partner saying he loved her before being found hanged in the garage.

Paul Thorns had just enjoyed a double date with his fiancée hours before his death at the home they shared together in a village in East Yorkshire on December 28 last year.

Hull Coroner’s Court heard the 24-year-old's long-term partner had gone to investigate when he stopped texting her back after saying he loved her.

The pair had enjoyed alcoholic drinks with friends at their home that evening, reports Hull Live .

But in the early hours of the morning, Mr Thorns was found unresponsive and was taken to hospital where he later died.

An inquest returned an "open conclusion" on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking about his death, his fiancée said in a statement: "It [his death] has hit us all like a sledgehammer. We thought he was going to be okay. There was no reason why he would take his own life.

"We had a good thing going. We were happy. We both had good jobs and had no money issues.

"He did not have any mental health problems. We spoke about how we wished to have a family and he was looking forward to that."

The hearing was told the pair had returned to the address after Mr Thorns had finished a half day at work on December 27 last year. They planned to have a few drinks that evening with another couple who they were close friends with.

Their friends left the property at around 1am and Mr Thorns and his partner said they would go to bed.

The pair then started texting each other while Mr Thorns was outside in the garden, but when Mr Thorns stopped replying at around 2.30am his partner went looking for him.

She found him unresponsive in their garage at around 2.47am and called emergency services to the scene.

Paramedics arrived at the property within minutes and gave him adrenaline and CPR, before taking Mr Thorns to York Teaching Hospital. He was sadly pronounced dead just five minutes later.

Consultant histopathologist at Hull and East Yorkshire hospitals NHS Trust, Dr Ian Richmond, stated the medical cause of death was hypoxic brain injury caused by hanging.

Mr Thorns, who originally was from Northumberland, worked as a labourer after completing a bricklaying course.

He bought the property in June 2017 with his fiancée and "had no money troubles".

His fiancée told the court through a statement that Mr Thorns had no mental health problems, but was aware members of his family had received help for depression.

Coroner Rosemary Baxter said that substances present in Mr Thorns' system at the time of his death could have affected his "cognitive and motor functions".

Returning an open conclusion, she said: "For me to give a conclusion of suicide on a balance of probabilities, I need to be sure that Paul took his own life and intended to do so.

"Suicide should not be presumed. It is probable, taking in all of the evidence, that his death was a tragic accident and a cry for help.

"I find that he had substances in his body at the time of his death. Therefore my conclusion is not that of suicide or accident death, but instead open conclusion into the death of Paul Thorns."
