Man, 22, spotted with gun by patrolling police during coronavirus lockdown

A man was spotted holding a gun at a house by police during pandemic lockdown patrols.

Officers were walking down Breck Road in Anfield when they saw the suspect who was on the run at the time.

The discovery was made at 11.05am, on Saturday as Merseyside and the whole of the UK was on a near-total lockdown.

The man, 22, was arrested, and taken to a police station for questioning on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

At the time, the Wavertree resident was also wanted for failing to attend court in relation to drug offences.

The gun, an imitation weapon, has been seized.

Ammunition was also discovered.

The man was also found with cocaine and cannabis.

Today, Merseyside Police confirmed Luke Bassnett, of Hey Green Road in Wavertree, had been charged with a range of offences.

He is accused of offences of possession of ammunition for a firearm without a licence, and possession of Class A and Class B drug.

Bassnett will appear in court today.

In a statement, a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We have charged a man in connection with an incident in Anfield on Saturday, 28 March.

"At around 11.05am, officers working in the area saw a man in possession of a suspected gun at an address on Breck Road.

"22-year-old Luke Bassnett of Hey Green Road, Liverpool, was arrested and has now been charged with possession of Class A drug (cocaine), possession of a Class B drug (cannabis) and possession of ammunition for a firearm without a licence.

"He was also wanted on warrant for failing to attend court in relation to drug offences.

"The recovered firearm was found to be an imitation and an investigation is ongoing.

"Bassnett has been remanded in custody to appear Liverpool Adult Remand Court, Derby Square today, Monday, 30 March."

Chief Inspector Matthew Moscrop said: “We know the fear and harm those involved in serious and organised crime can inflict on our communities.

“The information we receive from our communities plays a vital part in removing offenders and weapons from our streets.

The incident follows a number of other serious criminal offences on Merseyside in recent days, in strict contravention of government orders about coronavirus.

Yesterday, a woman, in her 30s, was left covered "head to toe in blood" after a off-road motorbike yob ploughed into her around Otterspool Promenade in south Liverpool.

The victim was walking her dog at the time, at 12.40pm on Sunday, and after the shocking incident, one member of the four-strong bike gang pulled a knife on brave passers-by who wanted to help.

On Friday, vodka was seized from a woman found sleeping in the driver's seat of a car on Waterpark Drive in Stockbridge Village.

The 49-year-old was found by police officers called to reports a vehicle had been travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Two bottles of vodka were seized from inside the car.

She was arrested.
