Man, 21, 'used axe to hack relative's two dogs to death in heinous attack'

A man allegedly hacked an elderly relative's two dogs to death with an axe in a heinous attack.

Douglas Usgaard, 21, has been arrested after allegedly killing 14-year-old Labradoodle, Trina, and 13-year-old Shi Tzu-bichon mix, Maz.

He was staying with relatives at the time of the reported incident in Decarah, Iowa, US.

At the time of the alleged attack, Usgaard was on bond for stealing two iPhones from a football stadium in July, according to reports.

It is unclear what drove him to allegedly hack the animals to death.

Usgaard was arrested on two counts of animal torture, the Daily Mail reports.

He is being held without bail for the alleged crimes after he violated terms of his probation from the incident in July, reports say.

Usgaard is reportedly in county jail while awaiting his next court appearance.
