A pedestrian is seriously injured after being struck by a car on the A690 just outside Durham city centre.
Emergency services were called to the collision involving a Vauxhall Antara and a 21-year-old man on the eastbound side of the road between the Gilesgate Roundabout and the Belmont junction at around 2.25am on Thursday.
The pedestrian suffered serious head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary , in Newcastle, for treatment.
However the 40-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Antara was uninjured.
The road was closed in both directions for more than four hours as a collision investigation took place.
The westbound side of the road reopened just before 7am and the eastbound carriageway was reopened at around 7.45am.
A police investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting reference number 16 of January 23.
