A 21-year-old man was killed in a Christmas Eve tragedy after the car he was in crashed into a tree.

Police were called to the scene of the fatal crash at Steyning 10.40pm yesterday.

The car, a silver BMW, had been travelling west near Wiston House when it left the road and hit a tree.

In a statement Sussex Police said: "Despite the efforts of the responders, a 21-year-old man from Horsham sadly died at the scene."

The road was still closed this morning to allow highways to clear the carriageway.

Police have not said if the 21-year-old man was the driver of the car or if there were any other injuries.

They added: "Police are working to establish the circumstances of the collision and are appealing for witnesses to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk‬ or ring 101 quoting Operation Finchley."
