Man, 21, dies in single-vehicle crash on Roper Highway near Ngukurr

A man has been killed in a single-vehicle crash in the remote Northern Territory overnight.

Police received a report at about 10.30pm on Thursday night that a vehicle had crashed on the Roper Highway near the remote community of Ngukurr, about 300 kilometres east of Katherine.

A 21-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, a police spokesperson said.

Authorities are yet to confirm how many people were in the car at the time of the crash.

"At this early stage of the investigation, it remains unknown how many people were travelling in the blue Toyota LandCuiser station wagon," Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

"It appears likely that alcohol was involved."

A crime scene was declared and guarded overnight by local officers.

Major Crash detectives have been sent from Darwin and Groote Eylandt to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police have urged anyone with information on the crash to contact them on 131 444.
