Man, 21, airlifted to hospital with head injury after 50ft Snowdonia fall

A man had to be airlifted to hospital after sustaining head injuries when he fell 50ft on a Snowdonia mountain.

The 21-year-old had been "scrambling up steep rock" on Moel Siabod, a 2,800ft peak above the village of Dolwyddelan, at around 2.15pm on Saturday, April 24 when he fell and hit his head on the rocks below.

He was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd, in Bangor, shortly after mountain rescue crews and the coastguard helicopter were called to the scene, NorthWalesLive reports.

A spokesman for the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team said: "The young man had been scrambling up steep rock on the south ridge when a handhold broke off. His scrambling mate reckoned his friend fell about 10 to 15 metres, banging the back of his head on rocks when he hit the ground. He was conscious but immobile."

The coastguard helicopter crew, based in Caernarfon, attempted to winch the man from the location but were not able to do so. The winchman was dropped close to the area so that he could begin caring for the injured man, as mountain rescue teams made their way to the scene.

As extra team members made their way to the scene with ropes to help with an evacuation, the coastguard helicopter crew managed to winch the man from close to the site and he was taken to hospital for further treatment.
