Man, 20, charged with downtown shooting after July 4 fireworks

July 07--A West Side man has been charged with shooting a teen in downtown Chicago shortly after thousands had gathered at Navy Pier to watch the Fourth of July fireworks show.

Marquell Barnes, 20, of the 3500 block of West 13th Place, was charged after he was identified as the gunman in the Saturday night shooting, police said.

Police said Barnes was part of a group that got into a fight with another group on the sidewalk in the 200 block of East Ohio Street about 10 p.m. Barnes shot a 19-year-old man twice in the abdomen during the fight, according to police.

The 19-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, officials said Saturday.

Responding officers arrested Barnes and recovered a firearm, police said. Barnes was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of unlawful use of a weapon, one count of use of a stolen firearm and one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer.

He appeared in Cook County bond court Monday and was ordered held without bond, according to court records. Barnes' next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

The 19-year-old man was one of 65 people shot -- 10 of them fatally -- over the Fourth of July weekend.
