Man, 20, arrested after two swans shot dead near Leeds

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two swans on marshland near Leeds.

The suspect was arrested yesterday on suspicion of criminal damage, following a CCTV appeal over the 'appallingly cruel' attack near Knowsthorpe water treatment works on Monday June 8.

The swans nesting on the site are reported to have had five eggs.

He was released under investigation while enquiries continue.

The CCTV appeal included two photos showing two men walking through the marshland off Pontefract Road.

Sergeant Dave Lund said at the time: “This is an appallingly cruel and unnecessary act and we are carrying out enquiries to find the person responsible and working with our colleagues from the RSPCA."
