Man, 18, in stolen van arrested following police chase in Wigan

An 18-year-old man has been arrested following a police chase in Wigan.

On Wednesday (January 5) police spotted what they believed to be a stolen Toyota Proace van while they were patrolling the Hindley Green area.

The van failed to stop, and instead tried to evade the police.

During the chase, the van collided with a car before coming to a stop on Manchester Road in Ince.

The driver of the car was a man in his 60s who was treated at the scene for injuries.

The 18-year-old driver of the Toyota Proace was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 11:30am this morning (Wednesday 5 January 2021) police were on patrol in the Hindley Green area when they spotted a grey Toyota Proace van which was suspected to be stolen.

"The vehicle failed to stop for police and officers engaged in a pursuit.

"The van then collided with another vehicle before coming to a stop on Manchester Road, Ince.

"Emergency services attended and a man in his 60's - the driver of the other vehicle - was treated at the scene for injuries.

"The driver of the Toyota van - an 18-year-old male - was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4788 quoting incident number 929 of 05/01/2022.

"Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 11:40am today (5 January 2022), two fire engines from Hindley and Wigan fire stations were called to a road traffic accident involving a car and a van on Dobson Park Way, Ince.

"Firefighters attended and used specialist equipment to rescue one person and make the scene safe.

"Crews supported colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service and were in attendance for around half an hour".
