Man, 100, vanishes from home with fears he may have tried to make 100-mile trip

Fears are growing for a missing 100-year-old man who vanished overnight and may have been seen more than 100 miles away.

William Johnston was last seen in the Maryhill area of Glasgow at 11pm on Friday.

Police Scotland said his disappearance is out of character, and he was likely to be wearing an "old-fashioned" green jacket, shirt, jumper, trousers and "smart" shoes.

On Saturday night, the Highland and Islands Police Division said Mr Johnston "has potentially been seen" in Aviemore, in the Cairngorms National Park, more than 100 miles to the north of where he was last seen.

Earlier, police had said the centenarian may have travelled to Gretna, almost 100 miles south of Maryhill, but he may still be in Glasgow.

The possible sighting occurred at around 2pm on Saturday, with the man wearing a green jacket, shirt and tie and carrying a blue suitcase.

Officers are concerned for his welfare given his age, said Sergeant Abdul Majid as police made a public appeal for information amid a desperate search for Mr Johnston.

A spokesperson for Greater Glasgow Police Division said earlier: "Police in Glasgow are seeking the public's assistance in tracing William Johnston, aged 100, who has been reported missing from Maryhill.

"William was last seen in the Hopefield Avenue area around 11pm on Friday, 28 August, 2020.

"He is described as white, around 5 ft 6 ins tall, slim build with grey hair and a moustache. He wears glasses.

"He is believed to be wearing an old-fashioned green jacket and is likely to be wearing a shirt, jumper, trousers and smart shoes."

Sergeant Majid added: "This is out of character for William and we are concerned for his welfare given his age.

"We believe he may have travelled to the Gretna area but he may still be in Glasgow."

The Highland and Islands Police Division said on Saturday night: "We are searching for William Johnston, aged 100, who has been reported missing from the Glasgow area.

"He has potentially been seen in Aviemore around 2pm today wearing a green jacket, shirt and tie and carrying a blue suitcase."

Anyone with information about Mr Johnston's whereabouts is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference number 1533 of August 29.
