Man, 100, pictured marrying bride in her 20s despite 80-year age-gap

A man believed to be at least 100 years old has married a young bride in her 20s.

The happy couple tied the knot in Indonesia, with groom Katte being old enough to have been a fighter during the Dutch colonial era early last century.

The wedding took place at bride Indo Alang's home in Wajo, in the central Indonesian province of South Sulawesi.

Speaking to local media, Ayu Anggreni Muchtar, a relative of the elderly groom, said that although his exact age is unknown he is definitely a centenarian.

"Yes, the wedding was held this afternoon at the bride’s home on Galico Street," he said.

"I’m not really sure about their exact ages but Katte is definitely over 100 years old, he was a fighter during the Dutch colonial era.

"His wife is still in her 20s."

Katte is said to have spent £279 (5 million IDR) for his wife's 'mahr', which is money or possessions paid by the groom to the bride and her family during Islamic weddings.

Marriages with this large an age gap are uncommon in Indonesia, but when they do occur they usually involve an older man wedding a much younger woman.

However, local media recently reported that a wedding took place in the country between a 71-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy.

Indonesia's legal minimum age for women to marry is 16.

However, a loophole in marriage law has reportedly allowed men to wed girls much younger.

With nearly 1.5m child brides, according to UNICEF figures, the country has the eighth highest number in the world and with 14% of girls being wed before the age of 18.
