Mamma Mia 3 teased as creator says 'It's meant to be a trilogy'

Fans of Mamma Mia! should get very excited as it looks like they could be set to get a third instalment.

The popular musical films featured a selection of iconic hits from Swedish pop band ABBA and are based on a stage musical written by Julia Craymer.

Now, Craymer has confirmed that a trilogy was always the plan for the film series.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Craymer revealed: "I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.

"I know Universal would like me to do it."

The film adaptation of the original 2001 stage musical was released in 2008 and saw Meryl Streep star as a hotel owner Donna who is helping plan her daughter Sophie ( Amanda Seyfried ) plan her wedding in Greece.

Donna is soon faced with her past when Sophie invites three former lovers of Donna (played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard ) to the wedding as one of them may be her father.

Ten years after the first film, a sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released in 2018 and followed Sophie as she dealt with her pregnancy and contemplated what her late mother went through in her own pregnancy, played in flashbacks by Lily James.

In addition to Julie Walters and Christine Baranski reprising their roles as Donna's best friends, the sequel also introduced pop music superstar Cher as Sophie's grandmother.

Cher subsequently went on to release her own cover album of ABBA songs entitled Dancing Queen.

So, how far along is Craymer with a potential third outing?

"I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog," she revealed.

It looks like the coronavirus pandemic may have slowed things down for now but perhaps we will get a comeback for our favourite musical series after all!

It is unknown which cast members will return, but we can't imagine the films continuing without Amanda Seyfried.
