Malta to ban all unvaccinated foreign visitors after Covid surge

Malta will ban all foreign visitors from entering the country unless they have received both doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

The rule, which has been in place for travellers across the UK, will be expanded from Wednesday amid a surge in new coronavirus infections.

Maltese health officials reported a doubling of new Covid-19 cases every day since Monday.

Previously tourists from other countries could enter Malta by showing evidence of their vaccination or a negative PCR test.

Passengers arriving in from the UK were excluded from this, with only fully vaccinated Brits allowed in due to concerns over the Delta variant.

Maltese Health Minister Chris Fearne said that the recent spike in cases had been among unvaccinated visitors - who were able to enter by showing a negative pre-departure Covid test.

Malta has currently vaccinated 79% of its adult population.

The country reported zero new Covid cases on a number of days in June, but the numbers have started to spike once again.

Health officials recorded 96 new virus cases on Friday, while the positivity rate has risen to 1.18 per 100 tests.

Mr Fearne told a press conference today said: “We will be the first EU country to do so, but we need to protect our society.”

Malta was one of a number of tourist hotspots to be moved onto Scotland’s green list on international travel.

Anyone arriving in Scotland from Malta does not need to self-isolate but must take a test two days after their return.
