Malta set to reopen to vaccinated Brits for summer holidays

Malta has announced that it will welcome back British holidaymakers from June - provided they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Malta, Gozo and Comino are due to reopen to vaccinated British tourists from June 1, 2021, and won't require a Covid test result for entry.

However, holidaymakers will need to show their vaccination certificate and prove they received the second dose of one of the approved jabs at least 10 days before arriving in Malta. This will need to be shown before boarding a flight in order to be accepted to travel.

Malta joins a line-up of countries that will reopen to vaccinated travellers including the likes of Iceland, Portugal and Cyprus.

Currently foreign travel is banned for Brits although there are some legally permitted reasons to head abroad. However, a holiday is not one of them, and rule-breakers could face fines of up to £5,000.

It's hoped that under England's lockdown roadmap foreign travel could resume from May 17, with ministers said to be considering a traffic lights system - and Malta is one of our picks of the countries that could be on the 'green' list.

Malta's vaccination programme is proving successful; according to its tourism authority, 40% of Malta's adult population have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Tolene Van Der Merwe, Director UK & Ireland of Malta Tourism Authority commented: "Malta is a very popular destination for British holidaymakers and is a key contributor to Malta’s economy, so we are excited to welcome back fully vaccinated travellers from the United Kingdom from 1 June 2021.

"The people of Malta are looking forward to tourists returning who have loved our sunshine, culture, food and warm spirit year in year out.

"Malta has implemented its Sunny and Safe COVID protocols, so visitors can be reassured that all restaurants, accommodation and service providers must comply with the highest levels of cleanliness and safety."
