Malta and Balearic Islands could be added to green list for travel later this week

Quarantine-free travel to Malta may be allowed from next week with trips to the Balearic Islands in Spain also possible.

According to reports some popular tourist hotspots in Europe could be placed on the UK's green list of countries tomorrow with them coming into force later this month.

The UK Government is expected to make an announcement on the nation's traffic light system tomorrow afternoon.

Scottish Government officials have tended to mirror the moves made by the government in Westminster on any change in the traffic light system.

It is hoped that some popular tourist spots will be added to the green list, giving lockdown-weary Scots the chance for a bit of foreign summer sun.

According to the Times newspaper, Malta could be the only addition.

However, a government source told the paper that there was a "real possibility" the Balearic Islands could be opened up too - a move described as a "game changer" for the beleaguered travel industry.

The archipelago includes Ibiza, Mallorca and Menora which are usually visited by more than five million Brits each year.

Any change of status would allow holidaymakers to travel to permitted countries from June 29.

If they are placed on the green list then people returning to Scotland wouldn't have to quarantine for 10-day.

Malta is one of the countries leading the way in Europe in terms of vaccinations, with nearly 60 per cent fully jabbed.

UK media minister John Whittingdale said he hoped the Government would be able to put more countries on the green list of travel restrictions later this week.

Whittingdale told Sky News the list would be reviewed “later this week to make revisions to the green list, and I hope that we can put more countries on to it”.

But he urged people to go on holiday in Britain.

“You can have a great holiday in Britain and I think a very large number of people will decide this year that that’s what they will do,” he said.

“Having said that, people like to get away to the sun and there are a number of countries on the green list, and hopefully it will be possible to increase that number.”

What countries are on the green list?

At present there are 11 countries across the world that are on Scotland's green list.

They are:

  • Australia
  • Brunei
  • Falkland Islands
  • Faroe Islands
  • Gibraltar
  • Iceland
  • Israel and Jerusalem
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands
  • St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
