Malone RFC appoint first-ever female club captain

Malone RFC have appointed their first-ever female club captain.

Peita McAlister will take up the role, continuing her longstanding association with the Belfast club.

The 28-year-old arrived at Malone as a five-year-old with her brothers James and Michael.

From those humble mini rugby beginnings, Peita went on to play for the underage girls' team before her academic studies took her to Swansea University where she played and also represented Welsh Universities before returning home to play for Queen's and making her Ulster debut in 2014.

The Malone connection runs deep in the McAlister family and it is no surprise that Peita takes it is an honour and a privilege to be the first female club captain at Malone, a club that she feels is like a second home.

Malone's Women's first team compete in the All Ireland League, and there are two more senior ladies teams and a youth section catering from 12 years through to young adult, delivering a clear pathway to the senior team.

“Being a playing member of the club since I was five years old and seeing the changes that the club has made in recent years with the women’s section, I think it is an exciting time for Malone RFC," Peita said.

"I can’t wait to see the progress made over the coming seasons and the hard work and dedication of all involved paying off.”
