Malmo rest stars ahead of Rangers clash as Champions League foes held by Halmstad

Rangers' Champions League opponents Malmo rested key stars ahead of their second leg clash against Rangers, as they were held to a 0-0 Allsvenskan draw.

The Swedish side were taking on Halmstad and rested no fewer than seven key players who started the first leg tie against Steven Gerrard's side.

Jo Inge Berget, Lasse Nielsen, Niklas Moisander, Bonke Innocent, captain Anders Christiansen, Antonio Colak and Veljko Birmancevic were all not in the starting line-up.

Only goalkeeper Johan Dahlin, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Soren Rieks and Oscar Lewicki remained in the Malmo starting XI.

The reigning champions did turn to their stars in the second half as Colak, Christiansen, Birmancevic, and Innocent all came off the bench.

Rangers suffered defeat to Dundee United, in the Scottish Premiership, in what has been a dismal week for Steven Gerrard's side, who have now lost two matches in a row.

Rangers need to secure victory at Ibrox to have any chance of qualifying to the play-off round of the Champions League.

A victory by a single goal margin will take the tie to extra time, as UEFA have scrapped the away goal rule for this season.

A win by two goals or more will secure Rangers their spot in the play-off round and set up a tie against Greek giants Olympiacos or Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

Jon Dahl Tomasson clearly has the Rangers tie at the forefront of his mind and Malmo's key players will all be fit and fresh to face the Scottish champions at Ibrox.
