Malmo near Rangers showdown as they secure Champions League advantage over Helsinki

Swedish champions Malmo are 90 minutes away from securing a showdown with Rangers in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

They hold the advantage over Helsinki after securing a dramatic 2-1 first leg win over their Scandinavian rivals at the Swedbank Stadium on Tuesday.

Malmo are in the driving seat thanks to Antonio Colak's strike just before the interval and Anders Christiansen's winner either side of Roope Riske's shock leveller in the 68th minute.

Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson remained an image of calm on the touchline despite some frights during a frenetic 90 minutes.

But with the away goals rule a thing of the past, it remains to be seen how the second leg shakes out when they meet in Helsinki next Tuesday night.

Malmo know full well Rangers will be a completely different prospect with Steven Gerrard boasting a perfect 11-0 record in qualification ties since he took the reins in 2018.

The Ibrox side will either face the Swedes or Helsinki in the first leg away from home on August 4 before returning to Glasgow the following week for the return leg.
