Malky Mackay set for Ross County as former SFA performance director returns to club management

Malky Mackay is poised to return to the dugout after wining the race to take over at Ross County.

The former SFA youth supremo is on the verge of replacing John Hughes who decided to step down after steering the Staggies to Premiership safety and is expected to be unveiled in Dingwall today.

Mackay has been looking for a return to the front line after his four years as national performance director came to an end last November amid covid cost cuts at Hampden.

The former Cardiff and Norwich City and boss is set to link up with County coach Don Cowie – who he signed as a player for Watford and Wigan – with Celtic coach John Kennedy having also been considered.

But County chairman Roy MacGregor will turn to Mackay as he looks to lay the foundations for a new era in Dingwall following their brush with relegation.

MacGregor said: “Football is very different to every other business, but the successful teams know who they are.

“Whether you are Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, the identity of that club is very clear and I do feel that from my position, that after nine out of ten years in the Premiership, we need to uncover our identity again and to make sure that for the next ten years the direction is very clear and mapped out well.

“We need to take stock and particularly that relationship with the fans has to become stronger.

“We’ve less community clubs, which puts more pressure on us. We need to understand where we are and where we need to go.”
