Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has revealed efforts to submit a draft-resolution before the United Nations General Assembly rejecting the US peace plan.
Maliki told Voice of Palestine radio that the draft would “stress our people’s right to self-determination,” in addition to a call for “ending the occupation, adopting a two-state solution, and affirming peace as a strategic choice for the peoples.”
He added that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas would address the UN Security Council on February 11 on the Palestinian stance towards the US plan.
In a statement, Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said: “The European Union is fully committed to the transatlantic partnership and values all efforts to help find a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
“The EU recalls its commitment to a negotiated two-State solution, based on 1967 lines, with equivalent land swaps, as may be agreed between the parties, with the State of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign and viable State of Palestine, living side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition – as set out in the Council Conclusions of July 2014,” he said.
“The US initiative, as presented on 28 January, departs from these internationally agreed parameters,” Borrell added.
Reuters published extracts from the text drafted by the Palestinians that was circulated to council members by Tunisia and Indonesia.
The draft-resolution “stresses the illegality of the annexation of any part” of occupied Palestinian territories and “condemns recent statements calling for annexation by Israel” of these territories, according to Reuters.
It also stresses the need for an acceleration of international and regional efforts to launch “credible negotiations on all final status issues in the Middle East peace process without exception.”
