Malik Turner quietly impressing in early stages of training camp

The Seattle Seahawks have 13 receivers competing for spots on the 53-man roster for the 2019 season. The team kept five on the active roster last year, so the battle during training camp is going to be competitive, to say the least.

One name to keep an eye on is Malik Turner, who made a handful of appearances for the Seahawks last season and is having a strong start to camp.

“Malik came back yesterday, had a great day,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said after Friday’s camp. “You can see he and Russ [Wilson] picked right up off where they left, and without working in the spring that’s hard to see.”

Turner spent most of the 2018 season on the practice squad, although he did appear in six games for the Seahawks, hauling in two receptions on three targets for 20 yards.

However, the former Illinois product has a long road ahead of him to make the Seahawks roster.

The team selected three wide receivers in the 2019 NFL draft. The three rookies will join returners Tyler Lockett, David Moore and Jaron Brown, not to mention Amara Darboh, Keenan Reynolds, undrafted free agent Jazz Ferguson and, of course, Turner.

Turner will have to beat out quite a few guys if he wants to make the Seahawks roster, although he seems like a prime candidate to end up on the practice squad again in 2019.
