Three male Diet members took part in a pregnancy simulation experiment to better understand the hardships pregnant women face and use what they learn when drafting policy proposals.
The lawmakers from the Youth Division of the Liberal Democratic Party participated in the two-day experiment, in which they wore jackets that simulated the average weight of a woman's belly during the seventh month of pregnancy.
Masanobu Ogura, Norikazu Suzuki and Takashi Fujiwara are all men in their 30s who have each been elected to the House of Representatives three times. After donning the 7.3-kilogram jackets, they attended party meetings, performed household chores such as shopping and cleaning the bathrooms, and shared their experiences via Twitter and Facebook.
The three held a debriefing session at the party headquarters on Friday, where Ogura said, "Being on my feet made my back hurt. Adding more places where pregnant women could sit and rest would make the city less burdensome for them."
