Malcolm Sargent House set for demolition as former Prestwick icon to disappear

A home abandoned by a kids’ cancer charity is set for demolition.

Prestwick’s Malcolm Sargent House is to come down following its decay.

The home was closed by CLIC Sargent in 2016 and flogged for retirement flats.

But the plan to build 60 luxury units subsequently fell through when developer McCarthy & Stone pulled out.

The building and its grounds, opened by Princess Diana in 1989, have since fallen into a bad state of repair.

Concerned locals have reported the site being used as a drinking den by youths, while giant weeds have replaced the once pretty home’s playpark.

Prestwick councillor, Hugh Hunter, said: “I was very disappointed and angry when CLIC Sargent closed down the family holiday centre at Malcolm Sargent House.

“Many Prestwick residents volunteered at Malcolm Sargent House and provided much valued support and comfort to the families who holidayed there.

“This fine house was abandoned by CLIC Sargent and the subsequent owners resulting in severe deterioration of the fabric and grounds.

“The site is now attracting those intent on drinking and causing vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

“For that reason, while I mourn the loss of such a fine building, I am supportive of the decision to carry out the demolition.”

Hundreds famously marched through Prestwick in a bid to save the home from closure.

Volunteers determined not to lose the work carried out have since opened Whiteleys Retreat on the outskirts of Ayr.

It’s understood the former Malcolm Sargent House is now in US-based ownership with no current plans lodged for its future.
