Malaysian couple welcome 10,000 guests to drive-through wedding

Tengku Muhammed Hafiz and Oceane Alagia's wedding was attended by thousands.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation of many large weddings this year, but one Malaysian couple has defied the odds, reportedly hosting 10,000 people at their event.

But this was no ordinary wedding.

The newlyweds, Tengku Muhammed Hafiz and Oceane Alagia, sat outside a government building and waved while guests drove past in cars to comply with the country's social distancing measures.

Before they left, wedding guests collected takeaway food from a nearby tent.

Local media reported it took three hours for all attendees to drive by.

Mr Hafiz's father, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, a former Malaysian minister, posted photos of the wedding on his official public Facebook account yesterday.

The unusual event was celebrated in "the new norm", he said.

"In estimation, I am informed that there are more than 10,000 vehicles here since this morning.

"Thank you all for understanding and adhering to all procedures made by drive-through attendance without getting out of the vehicle."

The event was held in the country's administrative city of Putrajaya, south of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia is currently facing a new wave of coronavirus infections.

The wedding came just one day Malaysia's High Court found Mr Adnan guilty of corruption.

The 70-year-old treasurer-general of Umno, Malaysia's largest and ruling Perikatan Nasional alliance party, was sentenced to a year in jail for accepting 2 million ringgit ($656,000) from a local businessman in 2016 when he was the federal territories minister.

He was also fined 2 million ringgit for the offence.
